President Donald Trump received a Super Bowl ring from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft as a show of gratitude for their invitation to the White House.
USA Today Sports reports Kraft was honored to be the first team to visit the White House during the Trump presidency.
Kraft was also impressed with the amount of time the team got to spend with the President as well as the tour they received.
In May, the Patriots owner spoke about his friendship with the former host of “The Apprentice.” Kraft said that after his wife passed away, Trump called him at least once a week for an entire year.
“There were five or six people who were great to me and he was one of them,” Kraft said. “Loyalty and friendship trumps politics for me. I always remember the people who were good to me in my most vulnerable time.”
At the time, Kraft also acknowledged that Mr. Trump may do or say things that are deemed controversial but “he doesn’t mean everything he says. I’m privileged to know that.”
In the last week before the election, coach Bill Belichick sent a letter to President Trump congratulating him on a “tremendous campaign.” Trump read the letter during a campaign rally in New Hampshire.
Belichick wrote in the letter:
“You have dealt with an unbelievable slanted and negative media, and have come out beautifully – beautifully. You’ve proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter. Your leadership is amazing. I have always had tremendous respect for you, but the toughness and perseverance you have displayed over the past year is remarkable. Hopefully tomorrow’s election results will give the opportunity to make America great again. Best wishes for great results tomorrow.”
Belichick addressed the letter after Trump clinched victory and said his gesture was not about politics. He wrote the letter because of the friendship he shares with the former real estate tycoon.
“Anybody who’s spent more than five minutes with me knows I’m not a political person,” Belichick said. “My comments are not politically motivated. I have a friendship and loyalty to Donald.”
According to the USA Today report, the ring was given to the President after the team’s visit in April. Because there is a value limit on gifts that a President receives, it is believed the ring is in the National Archives.
Patriots spokesperson Stacey James told the newspaper that the hope is for the ring to be part of President Trump’s presidential library after his presidency is finished.
