Phil Collins daughter Lily forgives rock star dad for not always being there…The famous daughter of Phil Collins drummed up some forgiveness for her rock star dad after a tumultuous childhood.Lily Collins, an actress and model, opens up in a new book of essays about how her rocky relationship with the Genesis singer and drummer took a toll on her during her youth.
“Because my dad was often gone, I never wanted to do anything that would make him stay away even longer,” Collins wrote in the book, according to People. “I became extra careful about what I said and how I said it, afraid he’d think I was angry or didn’t love him. And the truth is, I was angry. I missed him and wanted him there.”
The 27-year-old “The Blindside” actress goes on to explain that her father moved from England, where her family lived, to Switzerland after divorcing her mother when she was only 5.
She writes that he remained there for “more than 20 years” — and that distance between them had a lasting effect on Collins.
“I’ve realized that many of my deepest insecurities stem from these issues with my dad,” she wrote. “It’s taken me over a decade to resolve some of them (others I’m still resolving) and to finally build up the courage to speak my mind to him.”
The essay continues down a lighter path, however, with Collins ultimately forgiving her father and inviting him to join her in a brighter future.
“We all make choices and, although I don’t excuse some of yours, at the end of the day we can’t rewrite the past,” Collins contends. “I’m learning how to accept your actions and vocalize how they made me feel … I now understand that my frustrations surrounding our communication are not about changing you, but accepting you as you are.
“I forgive you for not always being there when I needed and for not being the dad I expected,” she continues. “I forgive the mistakes you made.”
Collins is the third of the “In the Air Tonight” rocker’s five kids. Her essay book “Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me” was released on Tuesday.
